Star Vista’s Your House South in Redwood City, CA, provides a "time-out" for both the youth and the family, and an opportunity to work on the family's situation in a safe and supportive environment. Services include a 24 hour youth crisis hotline, free emergency shelter, and voluntary residential services which include individual, family, group and aftercare counseling. Star Vista’s new Child and Adolescent Hotline & Prevention Program (CAHPP) is a youth- focused (ages birth to 18) hotline, available 24/7, to support parents, educators, counselors, doctors, coaches, and members of the community in San Mateo County. Star Vista’s The Children’s Place

Mission: To break the intergenerational cycle of familial chemical dependency

• Increase in perceived social support

• Decrease in feelings of shame, guilt, self-blame, and hopelessness

• Increase in healthy coping skills

• Increase in knowledge about the manifestations, biological basis, and consequences of addiction

Focus: Education/therapeutic support groups

Target Population: Children growing up in chemically dependent families

What is a GSA?

A Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is a student-run club in a high school or middle school that brings together LGBTQ and straight students to support each other, provide a safe place to socialize, and create a platform for activism to fight homophobia and transphobia.

Alateen Meetings in San Mateo County: help for families and friends of alcoholics. Alateen is different from adult meetings in that the meetings are conducted by the Alateen members (ages: 12-20). Adults may attend only with the permission of the Alateen members. But there are one or more adults in the room called sponsors, who help by assuring that Al-Anon principles are known and used during meetings.

Youth Space

A community drop-in center and mental health program for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and ally youth and young adults living in Santa Clara County. Services: Drop-In Peer Counseling, Individual Counseling, Case Management and Psychiatry. English, Spanish and American Sign Language. Payment: Folks between the ages of 13-25 insured through Santa Clara County based Medi-Cal or who are uninsured are eligible for counseling services.
